All About the Trip

The trip went pretty well, all things considered. We picked a nice weekend for it, at least, lovely weather. And I found another great B&B online, reasonable rates, pet-friendly, and no extra charge for having FOUR animals!!!! Luckily it’s only an hour’s drive from our house.

Lucky, I say, because it turns out poor Yoyo isn’t quite the traveler Princess is! She hated her carrier for starters, and we had a heck of a time catching her and then wrestling her into it! She’s been such a sweetie; it was quite a shock the way she all of a sudden turned into a little demon! Then, of course, she yowled for the first 45 minutes of the trip. This seemed to set Princess off, too, and although she’d never yowled before, well, this time she joined right in. Which of course set the dogs off barking, which got Jim to grumbling…a pleasant time was NOT had by all?

Finally everything seemed to calm down by the time we arrived at the B&B, a lovely little Victorian set up high on a hill and surrounded by what are probably some really lovely flowering trees in the springtime. We let the dogs out first so they could do their business, then got the cat carriers and carried them into our room. Princess used the litter box right away, but Yoyo refused and when we weren’t looking she had a little “accident” on the rug. Good thing we brought the super-strength enzymatic pet odor remover!

Yoyo finally calmed down a bit and curled up right in the middle of the four-poster bed for a nap. Amazingly, Princess jumped up next to her and curled up with her! Maybe there is an upside to all this misery! I just hope Yoyo pays attention to Princess and learns how to be a good little traveler, too. The dogs also settled in for a nap, so Jim and I went out for a nice long walk.

While we were out, we had the chance to talk to the woman who runs the B&B. She is very friendly, and a pet-lover for sure, but she’s definitely more of a dog person – and a large dog person at that! She even has an Irish Wolfhound! Luckily he seems to spend most of his time asleep behind the desk – she says he’s a big sweetie and loves all other dogs and cats, but I think our guys might have been a little scared. Anyway, she said it was okay to leave our animals alone in the room, and that if we wanted to go out for dinner she’d be happy to look in on them from time to time. (And she’d leave the Wolfhound out in the hall.) We said sure, and asked for recommendations for a good place to eat.

The place she suggested is famous for its extensive wine list, so when we did go out (after walking and feeding the babies and making sure Yoyo knew where to find the litter box!) we took a cab so we could both indulge. It’s a good thing, too, since we each had a few glasses of a lovely Merlot with our rack of lamb and chocolate mousse, and I admit that by the time we got back to the B&B neither one of us was really in the mood for pre-bedtime “walkies!” The kids were pretty excited to see us, though, so Jim reluctantly dragged himself out the door again, towed by Samson and Fifi, while I went straight to bed, LOL!
